The treeless plains of Samburu provide a habitat for numerous rare species. Aberdare National Park, forming eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley, incorporates moorlands and high forests. Nakuru known for its flamingoes, also has many other species, including the Rothschild's giraffe, warthog, water buck, buffalo, gazelle, reedbuck and hippo; and Masai Mara , located in the south west of Kenya, shares its border with Tanzania. Here the open savannah, dotted with acacia trees contains an astonishing concentration of game. This region is home to a diverse range of forest animals: elephant and rhino; the pig family comprising warthog, giant forest hog and bush pig; many antelope – waterbuck, suni, dik-dik, eland and the rare shy bongo. The cats are here too. Lions of this region are more hairy than those of the plains. Samburu Game Reserve is physically and faunally dramatic, for most of the year the area is dry under the harsh equatorial sun. Relief comes from the Uaso Nyiro River rising in the Aberdare to the west and varnishing into the Lorian swamp. Crocodiles bask on the sand bars. Water buck feed on the river bed grasses, while vervet monkeys and baboons forage nearby. This area is notable for lion, buffalo, elephant and for cheetah, lesser kudu and animals typical of the drier northern regions such as the fine-striped Grevy zebra, the graceful long-necked gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich. At the base of Africa's second-highest Mount Kenya is the elegant Mount Kenya Safari Club. Founded in 1959 by the film star William Holden, eccentric American Ray Tyan, and Swiss financier Carl Hirshcmann, this legendary club offer luxurious comfort in the heart of the wild. Day 8: Mount Kenya Safari Club – Lake NakuruMorning drive via Nyahururu Falls down to the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Arrive in Lake Nakuru National Park at mid day. Lake Nakuru, a beautiful, shallow alkaline lake, is the world famous haunt of flamingos, lion, baboon, buffalo, gazelle and both white and black rhino are seen here. Lodge: Lake Nakuru Lodge LDBB. Day 9: Nakuru – Masai MaraAfter breakfast depart for the renowned Masai Mara Game Reserve. With its rolling hills and grasslands, it is grazing ground for thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle during the annual migration, between July and October. Elephant, giraffe, lion, rhino, cheetah, buffalo, hippos and hyena can all be found in quantity. Lodge: Mara Serena Lodge LDBB Day 10: Masai – MaraFull day experience the Masai Mara magic! Morning and evening game drives in Kenya's premier reserve, famed for its phenomenal wildlife. As an optional activity, you can experience the rare excitement of game viewing from a hot-air balloon. Day 12: AmboseliA full day in Amboseli with game viewing alongside the magnificent snow covered Mount Kilimanjaro. This is the highest mountain in Africa. Best clearly seen early in the morning.
